A VERY LONG WAY FROM ANYWHERE ELSE – URSULA LE GUIN

SUMMARY :

The Story is about a 17 year old boy, which name is Owen. He hast just gotten 17 years old and his father bought him a brand new car for his birthday. Actually Owen says he doesn't want to have this car, because then he would be the typical american boy, who he doesn't want to be other than anyone else. Owen has plans for the future, to go to an collage called M.I.T. ( i forgot about what this university or collage was ) in Texas and to study there he would need a lot of money, because studying is pretty expensive in the U.S. and his family hasn't got enough money to get this new car and send him to this expensive collage. His mother wants him to go in the State University in his town, which is pretty cheap, but Owen thinks it is too normal and not satisfying, because he is one of the best in his school.

He gets to know a girl named Natalie Field. He likes her pretty much, and they meet often. She is 18 years old, plays viola, makes compositions, gives music lessons and music is the most important thing in her live. They get to know each other better. Finally they get to kiss after a really long lasting friendship. They love each other, but he wants more and wants sex with her. She doesn't want to get this far with a friend. She thought a man-woman friendships could be without sex and that's what she wanted, but now she knows, it is not possible. They kind of quarrel and after Natalie ,has gone out of the car, he drives on a hill and has an accident, which the he survived, but the car was tottaly wrecked up. He was not really bad injured by the accident, but was more injured by Natalie. Since now he changed. He stays home most of the time, doesn't do anything for school and doesn't even talk to Natalie any more. 2 months pass by and he gets a letter from the M.I.T., the collage he wants to go to, but he ignores it. He is kind of down and interested in nothing, until he gets himself to go to the first concert of Natalie in the church. During the concert he can't take it any more and has to cry. On the way home he meets her again and they talk, get to kiss eachother again, but nothing more. Now he is motivated to go to M.I.T. in Texas and soon Natalie goes away to the university she wants. The story ends with Natalie in the train and Owen waving her goodbye.
